In the street

Some facts

Why is the sun dangerous for the eyes ?

In the light that the sun conveys, there are harmful rays that we can neither see nor feel.

They are called ultraviolet rays or UV rays.
If UV rays reach your eyes, they may damage them. Fortunately, there are sunglasses to protect the eyes from UV rays. However it is very important not to look directly at the sun.

Some advice

Do not forget to wear sunglasses when it is sunny !

What you need to know

In the sun, watch out : danger ahead !

Before the age of 18, exposure to ultraviolet rays (UV) can not only damage the skin, but it also can provoke eye lesions. Thus, being often exposed to UV rays very young can provoke serious retina troubles later on.

This is the reason why it is necessary to protect your children’s eyes !

Golden Rules

Protect their eyes from the sun : have them wear a cap and sunglasses.

Be careful ! When the sky is overcast, UV rays are diffused through clouds and are reflected by various surfaces: white walls, windows, water, sand, snow…

To protect their eyes.

Choose sunglasses with a frame that covers the temples.

The protection offered by sunglasses goes from 0 to 4.

Choose category 3 for usual conditions, 4 for extreme conditions (sea, mountain, tropics…) or for newborns. The CE label followed by the category gives you total security.

Chooses sunglasses which offer a 100 % UVA and UVB filter.

Be careful ! The quality of the filter is independent from the colour of the glasses. Thus, very dark glasses will not necessarily protect from UV rays while transparent correcting glasses can assure a total protection. The tint will however protect their eyes from glare or reflecting objects.

In the summer they want to play sports ?

Avoid letting them go out between 11 am and 4 pm. Convince them rather to be outdoors in the morning or in the late afternoon. Do this whatever their age is !

On the beach use a large parasol in order to create as much shade as possible.

Bend it towards the sun, as close to the ground as you can. Reduce the surface which lets the light in, by using a second parasol for example !
