In the light that the sun conveys, there are harmful rays that we can neither see nor feel.

They are called ultraviolet rays or UV rays.
If UV rays reach your eyes, they may damage them. Fortunately, there are sunglasses to protect the eyes from UV rays. However it is very important not to look directly at the sun.

Some advice

Do not forget to wear sunglasses when it is sunny !

For more details  The secrets of UV radiation

In the light sent by the sun, there are ultraviolet rays (UV) which we can neither see nor feel. Yet, they can be dangerous for our health. Being exposed to the sun for too long can thus provoke the famous "sunburn" but it can also be harmful for our eyes.
  • UV rays have been classified into 3 categories according to their wavelengths, short or long, causing more or less dangerous effects on our health. The most dangerous, UVC, are mostly stopped by the ozone in the atmosphere. On the contrary, UVA and UVB rays are absorbed by eye tissues and get into the skin, thus sometimes causing cataracts or skin cancers.
  • Efficient sunglasses protect you.
But be careful : even with sunglasses you must never look directly at the sun. The danger is not only in UV rays. Infrared radiation and radiance can cause the retina irreversible damage that can entail partial or global blindness as you get older. This is the reason why if you want to observe the sun, in the case of an eclipse for example, you MUST wear special sunglasses !
  • Staying in the shade reduces the quantity of UV radiation.
However, be careful : even in a shelter you do get the light of the sun and thus UV radiation! Indeed, walls, objects and the floor reflect the light, in all directions ! Towns are as dangerous as the sea or mountains because the light and its UV rays are reflected on windows, white walls or smooth surfaces… At high altitudes the quantity of UV rays increases 10 % every 1000 metres and even more if the ground is covered in snow. Finally, the drier the air is and the more south you go, the more UV rays you get. Be extra careful in the summer.
